Vermiculite

So yay!! I found the vermiculite! After a large number of phone calls and emails, I found a place here in Greenville that sells it. It was $12.98 for a 4 cubic foot bag. The name of the place, in case you are looking for some, is South Pleasantburg Nursery. I hope to go back when they get the bedding plants in. And they encourage organic fertilizers, etc as well. It is a very nice store!

The seedlings that we planted last week are mostly up. I planted, and Knox helped by trying to grab my seeds, the spoon, the water, etc. We did Roma and beefsteak tomatoes, a bush cucumber called Pickle Bush, cabbage, marigolds, several different herbs, squash, etc. As soon as we get the boxes built, I will plant snow peas, English peas, carrots, radishes and lettuce.

I know that the last frost date is around the middle of April here, but it will be really easy to cover the boxes if we need to and usually by the end of March it is warm enough to get the rest of the stuff out. I might get another variety of cucumber yet just for eating. No zuchini, since we are not too fond of it.

Its that time again.....

......chilly, short, winter days, and we gardeners are itching to start seeds, get outside and get some dirt under our fingernails. Here in South Carolina, our winters are blessedly short and its only a month to warmer temps. This year, instead of buying a tiller or finding someone to do it for me, I am investing in the materials for Square Foot Gardening. This blog will chronicle my experiences.

I am not a novice at gardening. I have had my own regular gardens for several years, and helped my parents with their lovely one in Oregon. For Christmas, my husband gave me the books and I am going to follow the directions exactly.

I love to garden. I hate to weed. And I especially hate to have our neighborhood ground hogs mow down all my lovely peas and beans. So, according to Mel, this method cuts out most of the weeding.... So we are moving the garden close to the house, and surrounding it with a temporary fence to keep in my son and to keep the critters out.

I searched online for blogs utilizing this gardening method and did not find many at all, so this is my attempt to raise awareness on the web!
